Grachan Moncur III was a powerhouse trombonist and composer who went from playing bop with the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet to stretching out with Jackie McLean and other forward-looking mid-60s jazz players, to moving to a more open/free thing in the '70s and '80s. The band is focused on work Moncurdid with McLean and on his own in the '60s—on records like McLean’s One Step Beyond and Destination Out, and his own records,Evolution and Some Other Stuff.
